Last
week was an extremely tedious week for you. You spent every day after school
from 2:15 to 4:00 giving members of the Glasgow High School Drama Club pre-auditions
for the school musical. As you already know, a pre-audtion is an opportunity
for you to listen to students sing, watch them dance, and see them act so
you can get an idea of what you will have to work with in the actual musical.
A total of 33 students from the Drama Club came
to pre-audition for the musical. Each student had to memorize a brief monologue
and perform it on stage with emotion and movement. In watching them audition,
you witnessed students of varying levels of talent. Some were tremendous
actors, some were mediocre, and others were unprepared or not so good. You
also had each of the students prepare and sing "There's No Business Like
Show Business" while an accompanist played the piano. Once again ,some
were tremendous actors, some were mediocre, and others were not so good,
or completely unprepared.
The students were taught
a brief dance by the choreographer
to see not only how well they danced, but also how quickly they
caught on. Believe it or not, all of the students had tremendous dance ability,
and the choreographer was very impressed..
The last part of the audition, but
one of the most important, was to give each student a voice test.
As we know, there are several different voice types, and it is important
to determine what each students voice type is before casting them as a role
in the play. Each student was given a voice test, and everyone's voice type
was successfully determined.
A great deal of information was gathered
at these pre auditions. All of this information will be used in the next two
weeks when you are trying to decide what musical is right for your school.
