Introduction

Congratulations! You have been chosen to produce and direct the school musical at your High School. In this Webquest, your goal will be to tackle the first part of this enormous project, and that is deciding which musical to produce. Extensive research must be done before making your final choice. As will will soon realize, there are many factors to consider when making this decision. Anyway, you have a lot of work ahead of you, so you'd better get started. Good Luck!

The Task

Your goal over the next few weeks is to decide what musical you are going to produce at your High School. After pre auditioning the students who have committed to being in the play, you have become well aware of what kind of talent you have to work with. Now, you are going to have to give a lot of thought as to what musical will be appropriate for your school, and for the talent you have to work with. Unfortunately, you are not  familiar with many musicals. Therefore, extensive research will have to be done on different musicals before you make this decision. You will soon realize that there are a lot of things to take into consideration when choosing a musical. Luckily there are an abundance of Web resources available to help you in your research.  In the process of deciding on a musical, you yourself will also be learning new information on musicals. You end goal is not only to chose the musical appropriate for your school, but also prepare a Powerpoint presentation for the students who will be auditioning, containing a detailed description about the musical you have chosen. You will complete this presentation using the information you gather on the Web.

The Process

You have four weeks to complete this assignment. The first two weeks will be spent in the computer lab doing research on different musicals. The next two weeks will be spent outside of class applying the information you gathered, and reporting on it. Before beginning the process, it is important that you are very organized. Therefore, it is very important that you have a folder and a notebook to hold the information you gather. You also must have a blank floppy disk so you can save your reports and findings.

WEEKS ONE AND TWO

  1. First, print and read the paragraph on School Talent. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of that page, which will take you to the Talent Findings Page. Print that page out as well.  Be sure to review both of these documents very carefully before you proceed to the next step. They contain information that you will have to examine very closely when you make your decision on a musical.
  2. Next, print out the Talent Requirement template. Also, save the template in Microsoft Word,  or Netscape Composer.
  3. Now that you have an idea about the students you have to work with, it is time to start researching different musicals. There are an extremely large amount of musicals available. You are encouraged to research as many as possible. Even though you are are eventually going to have to decide on only one musical to produce at the school, you are required to report your findings on ten different musicals. Be sure to research musicals only that you feel you have the talent for. The StageAgent and Musicals.Net web sites will be great resources for finding talent requirements. As you research, fill in the Talent Requirement template .
  4. Print out the Musical Questions page before you proceed. You are to carefully complete the questions on this page for all ten musicals. You may jot down your finding in your notebook, or type them in a Microsoft Word document, and save the document to your disk. DO NOT type your final draft yet, as that will be completed later. This time is to be spent solely on research.  Below are a great deal of links to some excellent web sites that will provide you with information you need.

WEEKS THREE AND FOUR

  1. Now that you have thoroughly researched several different musicals, it is time to start narrowing down your decision of what musical you will perform. At this point, you should be narrowing your decision down to 5 musicals.  Your decision should be based  on the talent you have to work with, and also on the content of the production. Go to the Reflective Questions page 1, and ask yourself the question given listed. These questions will assist you in narrowing your decision down. If after answering these questions, five of the  musicals you reported on do not appeal to you, you may have to go back and research some more, until you have found five you think will work at your school. If you need to do this, you may use my computer at school, or make your own arrangements with the computer lab.
  1. Next, if you have not already done so, it is time to fill in the Talent Requirement Template, which you have already printed out.  In the first column, below the Your Talent row, put the names of the five  musicals you've decided on in the rows labeled 1-5. Then carefully fill in the information for the 5 musicals with the number of people needed for each category. As mentioned earlier, the Stage Agent and Musicals.Net web sites will be very helpful in completing this form. Once the form is completed, type the information into the template, print a copy, put it n your folder, then save it to disk. This document will be one of the key resources you will use in making your final decision.
  2. Now you have come to the most important part of your discussion. It is time to decide on the musical you are going to produce at Glasgow. Be sure to carefully scrutinize your Talent Requirements document once again to make sure you have the talent required for the musical you choose. Finally, go to Reflective Questions page 2 and answer the questions carefully, and thoughtfully.
  3. Once you have made your final decision, you are to type a 300-400 word document, explaining and justifying why you chose the musical you did. Your justification must be convincing. You must prove that the musical you chose is suitable for your school. Please be sure to list the names of the students (from your Talent Findings Page) who could possibly play the lead and supporting roles in the play. Be sure to print a copy, out it in your folder, then save the document to disk.
  4. Now it is time to type your final draft reporting your findings from the Musical Questions page. You must type ten different documents, either in paragraph or list form, being sure to cover all the questions asked of you. Refer to the notes you took previously in your notebook.  Be sure to save them to disk, print each one out, and then place them in your folder.
  5. It is now time to work on your Powerpoint presentation. The presentation will be given to the entire Drama Club. It's main purpose will be to announce to the group what musical you have decide to do, and to give them an in-depth description about the musical.  Your presentation must be no longer that 15 minutes in length. Check the Guidelines for Powerpoint Presentation to know exactly what is expected of you. Once it is completed, save the presentation to disk.
12. It is now time to present the Powerpoint presentation to the class. You will soon be given a date by me as to what day your presentation will be given. This will serve as a practice presentation for when you present this to the Drama Club. Once again, it must meet the criteria given in the Guidelines for Powerpoint Presentation document.

Congratulations! You have completed your Web quest! I am hopeful that you feel confident in the decision you have made. Several portions of this project will be graded. Below is a list of all the materials that must be handed in to me. All of these documents will be graded. They all must be printed out and stapled together in the order listed below. Please also provide a cover page for this project.

1) The 400 word document justifying your decision
2) The 10 documents reporting on the Musical Questions Page
3) Your completed Talent Requirement Page.
4) You will also be graded on the content of your Powerpoint Presentation, and the presentation itself.  Be sure to give me the disk with your presentation on it, so I can further evaluate it.

Evaluation

Below is the chart I will use to determine your grade for this assignment. The first column states each objective you will be graded on. The 2nd column states how many points can be earned for each objective. I will be filling in the 3rd column with the points you have earned for each objective of this project.  Comments will be given in the final column, and your total will be added up and placed at the bottom of the chart.

Conclusion

Congratulations once again on completing this assignment. I am confident that you have learned a great deal of information about different musicals, and hope you have enjoyed doing so. As you have probably discovered, deciding on a musical is not an easy process. It takes a lot of thought and care if the best decision is going to be made. I know that some of you are interested in directing in the future, and I hope this assignment was beneficial to you. Thank you for all your hard work!
